Swine Flu in Schools Information Leaflet

Subject: Information regarding Swine Flu - For Parents and Carers
As you may be aware from national and local media there have been outbreaks of swine flu in schools across the country. The Health Protection Agency has developed the attached leaflet for schools which gives further information about Swine Flu.
The key information is that most people diagnosed with swine flu have experienced relatively mild flu symptoms and have quickly recovered.
Unless there is an outbreak in a school then the advice of the Health Protection Agency is that schools should remain open. Furthermore, unless children are showing flu-like symptoms there is no need for them to be away from school, as flu viruses (such as swine flu) are generally not transmitted from one person to another unless the child is showing symptoms (such as coughing and sneezing).
In the event of a confirmed case at a school the Health Protection will work closely with the school to identify the best course of action. This may or may not involve closing the school for a period of time and will depend on the individual case.
If you or your child develops symptoms of flu-like illness the advice of the NHS is to stay at home and contact your GP or NHS Direct on 0845 4647. Each case will be assessed and, if necessary, testing and treatment will be provided.
