Curriculum » Design and Technology
Design and Technology has a vital role to play in the school’s curriculum. It prepares pupils to play a constructive role in a highly technological society, enabling them to influence and improve the way we live and the quality of our environment. James Dyson states ‘the teaching of quality Design and Technology in our schools is a vital requirement for the country’s future in the 21st century’.
Design and Technology is best developed through pupils being engaged in practical activities, which combine design and making. The creative and design process is at the heart of the subject.
Children are able to apply their knowledge and understanding learnt in other subjects, such as Mathematics and Science. Design and Technology provides children with the opportunity to use their skills, knowledge and understanding in a practical context, enabling them to produce practical solutions to real life problems.
All topics are relevant, challenging and motivating and encourage independent thinking, problem solving, decision- making, investigating and evaluating. This approach provides children with personal satisfaction, self-esteem and a sense of purpose, as well as developing an appreciation of quality design, the world we live in and the resources which sustain it.
