Homework

Homework is an important part of children´ s learning for a number of reasons:

• It enables children to consolidate and extend the learning in the classroom.
• It helps to develop good habits of regular, independent work at home.
• It encourages children to take personal responsibility for the organisation of some of their work.

All children are expected to do homework, although the amount increases as children progress through the school. There is a published timetable for homework at the start of each year and teachers seek to set work so that children have a reasonable time to complete it.

Working at home is an important link between school and parents. To support this, children are given a Homework Diary. Parents are asked to check and sign the Homework Diary weekly; to take an interest in homework; to provide, if possible, quiet conditions for their child to study and to inform the school if there are any problems

Assessment

Children´s work is assessed in a variety of ways and their achievements recorded. Teachers measure progress from day to day by marking written work, assessing practical work and listening to children speaking and explaining.

Tests are also given in a number of subjects as part of regular assessment of children´s progress. These are used to support the teacher assessment and inform future work programmes which may include intervention for children experiencing difficulties or extension work for the more able child.

Parents are encouraged to visit the school to discuss their child´s progress with the class teacher, Head of Year or the Headteacher, on any particular matter of concern at any time during the school year.

Consultation Evenings, with staff, take place throughout the year. As well as receiving your child´s annual report, you will also receive a written Interim Report to update you on your child´s progress. There is also an opportunity to discuss your child´s report with subject teachers following receipt of the report.
